Volunteer in Heath and Reach

We believe in preparing young people with Skills for Life.

As Scouts, we encourage young people to do more, learn more and be more,
But with a huge waiting list we need your help to get more local Young People involved.

We’re looking for people with new skills and a willingness to help. Maybe that’s you?

We have roles working with Young People, or if you don’t fancy that maybe you could help out with an admin. or management role?

Whether you’re brand new to Scouting, or maybe you were involved when younger, we’d love to hear about you. There’s a selection of roles below showing how you could get involved, though they’re just examples: we’re all volunteers and roles can be adapted to meet your time and skill.

If you’d like to find out about any of these, or just want a chat about ways you could volunteer in the Scout Group please complete the volunteering form.

Unsure if it’s for you? Try the 4-week challenge

  • Week 1: Come and visit, see what we do, one of our current volunteers will show you around.
  • Week 2: Help out, get to know some names, and join in with an activity.
  • Week 3: Get a bit more involved, help another volunteer run a base or activity.
  • Week 4: Decide if it’s for you.

Charity Trustee

Do you have a little bit of time and enthusiasm to help a local charity?

We need some extra Trustees who can oversee the administration of the Scout Group. We have a Chair and Treasurer, but we’d welcome people to join them with specific skills or just enthusiasm! And representatives of Beaver, Cub and Scout families.

Our Trustees usually meet four or five times a year.

Members will help ensure the smooth running of the Scout Group… though quite what they take on can vary. It could be anything from meeting the fire prevention officer, to buying new blinds, to showing a prospective renter around.

It might be helping to run a fund-raising event, generating some publicity, taking on a project to improve the Hut, or investigating reducing costs with the insurance company.

Volunteer with Young People

Could you helping out at some weekly meetings, or attend weekend events to help prepare young people with Skills for Life?

As part of the team you will do all of this and more, using your existing skills and learning new ones… and you might be surprised what hidden skills you have!

The volunteers in each Section help plan and deliver a safe and exciting programme for young people, making sure everyone gets a wide variety of activities and the chance to spend at least one night away each year.

You’ll use your energy and creativity to help young people have fun, develop their potential and earn a wide range of badges and awards, including the prestigious Chief Scout Awards. Of course you won’t have to do this alone – a team of supporters, parents and the young people themselves will help you plan and deliver the programme. But it’s your enthusiasm and sense of fun and adventure that will inspire them.

We are looking for new volunteers in all our Sections.

Building manager

Could you help us make better use of our building in the village?

This could be some or all of these things:

  • Help keep on top of safety and legal requirements like fire checks.
  • Seek better value for money with things like utility bills.
  • Help with a bit of DIY and upkeep – splashing some paint around or fixing the occasional crack and leak.
  • Helping manage prospective bookings.
  • Help develop a vision for improving the building for the next 50 years.

We are looking for people who are willing to help out with these types of things so we have a useful facility for the young people and the village.

Group Manager

Could you imagine yourself encouraging activities like camping, climbing, caving, leading community projects or similar activities to help prepare young people with Skills for Life?

Who supports the volunteers who make everything happen? People like you.

You can inspire, motivate and plan ahead. You’ll enjoy working with adults and young people in your local area and seeing the impact of your efforts. You’ll be organised, diplomatic and know how to get the best of out people.

And because you believe in the power of Scouting to help more young people you’ll know it’s all worthwhile.

Sound like you? Great. Let’s talk.

Do you know your Facebook from your TikTok? Can you manage a small digital community? Then we would love to use your skills to provide to manage our social media channels.

Heath and Reach Scouts now need a Social Media Manager to help promote us and our achievements and events… not loads of things, just a few posts so our families, prospective members, and the village know what we’re up to. You’ll be just as happy writing a headline as keeping up with local online conversations.

With experience of using social media and good writing skills, you’ll be happy to work on your own initiative to set guidelines. No specific time commitment is required and the role is flexible enough to fit around you.

We can pick-and-mix to suit your time and skills. For example:

Recruiter: Could you help us maintain posters and adverts to try attract new volunteers?

Events: Could you help organise occasional events for the young people. A trip out or guest booking?

Record keeper: Could you help us keep on top of our admin? Help keep track of badges, risk assessements and make sure our fire certificates are up-to-date?

Cook: At some of our events we need to be able to trust someone with making sure everyone is fed. Could you take charge on designing the menu, ordering food and overseeing catering?

Van driver: Getting equipment to events is a vital but thankless task, but maybe you’re an expert in it?

Fundraiser: Could you fill in a grant application? Ask local companies for support? Spot opportunities to raise some some funds?

Specialist instructor: Do you have a hobby that’s a bit specialist? Could be outdoors (archery, kayaking, mountain climbing), or more practical (DIY, needlework, food hygiene) or wider interest (stamp collecting, face painting). Just being able to help us run a session 1-2 times a year would help enrich our programme.
